CBD Oil for Seizures in India : Does it Help?

CBD oil has emerged as a potential therapeutic option for managing seizures. Epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures, affects millions of people worldwide. In India, where the prevalence of epilepsy is significant, finding effective treatments is crucial for enhancing the quality of life for those afflicted.

Before delving into CBD oil’s efficacy, it’s essential to grasp the basics of epilepsy (seizures). Epileptic seizures occur due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. These seizures can manifest in various forms, from convulsions to temporary loss of awareness or unusual sensations. Triggers for seizures vary from person to person and can include stress, sleep deprivation, flashing lights, and certain medications.

Causes of Epilepsy

Epilepsy can stem from various factors, including genetic predisposition, brain injury from trauma or infection, developmental disorders, or structural abnormalities in the brain. Identifying the underlying cause is crucial for devising an effective treatment plan.

How CBD Can Help ?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the cannabis plant. Research suggests that CBD may exert anticonvulsant effects by interacting with neurotransmitter systems in the brain.

CBD’s potential mechanism of action in reducing seizures is multifaceted. It interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which plays a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes, including neuronal excitability and neurotransmitter release.

By modulating neurotransmitter signaling and dampening excessive neuronal activity, CBD may help prevent the abnormal electrical discharges that underlie epileptic seizures. Additionally, CBD exhibits anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties, which could further contribute to its anticonvulsant effects.

FDA Approved CBD for Seizures

In the last five years, research has focused on a plant-based form of CBD for treating various epilepsy types like Lennox Gastaut syndrome (LGS) and Dravet syndrome, as noted by Dr. Patel. These investigations led to the creation of Epidiolex, the inaugural FDA-approved prescription CBD for managing seizures linked with these syndromes in patients aged two and above.

It has demonstrated efficacy in epilepsy treatment, particularly in cases of treatment-resistant epilepsy like Dravet Syndrome or LGS. This CBD formulation is considered the safest for daily seizure control. Additionally, it permits medical professionals to administer higher doses safely. In an interview, the famous Dr. Gardner mentioned the importance of treating epilepsy patients with a CBD-dominant product with minimal THC content, emphasizing a high CBD to THC ratio.

Are there particular CBD strains or products recommended for seizures?

In a 2018 review of studies, researchers found that cannabis products rich in CBD seem to be more effective at reducing seizure frequency.

Recently, in a Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT02224690 or GWPCARE4), 171 patients with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) were studied. The trial aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of CBD oral solution as an adjunctive treatment in reducing drop seizures compared to a placebo. Participants were divided into two groups: 85 received placebo, and 86 received CBD at a dose of 20 mg/kg/day for 14 weeks.

After 14 weeks of treatment, the CBD group experienced a median reduction of 43.9% in monthly seizure frequency compared to baseline. Additionally, 44% of patients in the CBD group reported a reduction in seizures frequency of 50% or more, compared to 24% in the placebo group. The study concluded that long-term administration of CBD oral solution reduced seizure frequency in patients with LGS compared to placebo.

Some CBD-dominant cannabis strains, such as Charlotte’s Web, ACDC, Vijaya Amrit and Placidiol, contain high levels of CBD and minimal THC. These strains are often preferred for their potential anticonvulsant properties. CBD products come in various forms, including oils, tinctures, capsules, edibles, and topical creams. Choose a formulation that aligns with your preferences and lifestyle needs.

Full spectrum CBD Dosage Recommendations :

According to international standards and research findings, the typical clinical dosage of FDA-approved CBD for seizure treatment begins at 2.5 mg/kg, administered twice daily. A standard maintenance dose is around 5 mg/kg, also given twice daily, while the maximum dose reaches 10 mg/kg, twice daily. Additionally, research indicates that CBD interacts with medications such as brivaracetam, clobazam, and eslicarbazepine.
